Deadly Ferry Fire Off Indonesia Leaves At Least Five Dead as Dozens Remain Missing

Passenger Ferry Engulfed by Flames Off Java

A routine ferry journey turned into a desperate fight for survival after a passenger vessel caught fire off Indonesia's main island of Java, forcing hundreds of passengers and crew to flee the burning ship.

Authorities confirmed that at least five people have died, while dozens remain missing as emergency teams continue searching the surrounding waters.

The incident is among the country's most serious maritime disasters this year.

Hundreds Forced to Evacuate

The Mutiara Sentosa 2 ferry was carrying 271 people, including passengers and crew, on a scheduled voyage from Surabaya in East Java to Makassar in South Sulawesi when the fire erupted early Sunday morning.

As thick smoke quickly spread across the vessel, passengers gathered on the upper decks while others jumped into the sea wearing life jackets in an attempt to escape the flames.

Videos shared online captured scenes of panic as smoke engulfed much of the ferry.

Massive Rescue Operation Underway

Nearby commercial ships were among the first to respond after receiving distress calls from the ferry.

A tugboat and several passing vessels rescued many survivors before Indonesian search-and-rescue teams arrived.

By Sunday afternoon, rescuers had safely evacuated 225 people, while recovery operations continued for those still unaccounted for.

The Indonesian Navy later deployed additional ships to assist with the search.

Fire Cause Still Unknown

Officials have not yet determined what sparked the blaze.

Investigators are expected to examine the vessel once it is safe to do so, while maritime authorities continue collecting information from crew members and survivors.

Communication with the ferry was reportedly lost shortly after the captain first alerted authorities about the onboard fire.

Difficult Conditions Hamper Rescue

Rescue efforts have been complicated by rough seas and high waves.

Some rescue boats were forced to return to shore because of dangerous conditions, while larger vessels continued searching the area.

Authorities say the operation will continue until every missing passenger has been accounted for.

Ferry Route Serves Thousands of Travelers

The ferry regularly operates between Surabaya and Makassar, one of Indonesia's busiest domestic sea routes.

The journey typically takes around 40 hours and is widely used by passengers as well as cargo transport connecting the islands of Java and Sulawesi.

Maritime Safety Under Scrutiny Again

Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, depends heavily on ferry transportation for both people and goods.

However, the country has experienced numerous maritime accidents over the years, with investigators frequently citing overcrowding, aging vessels, and inconsistent enforcement of safety regulations as contributing factors.

The latest tragedy is expected to renew calls for stronger safety standards and emergency preparedness across Indonesia's ferry industry.

Outlook

As rescue teams continue searching for the remaining missing passengers, families are anxiously awaiting updates while investigators work to determine what caused the devastating fire.

The incident serves as another reminder of the critical importance of maritime safety in one of the world's busiest island nations, where millions rely on ferry transportation every year.

Inside Southern Lebanon, a Ceasefire Gives Way to Checkpoints, Rubble and Uncertainty

A ceasefire is supposed to bring quiet. In southern Lebanon, residents say the reality is far different.
